Yongin, promoted to the city status in 1996, is adjoining with Sungnam to the North, Suwon and Hwaseong to the east, Ansung to the south, and Icheon to the east. It occupies an area of 592 square kilometer, which takes up of 5.8% of the total land surface area of the Gyeonggi Province. The population of the city is around 777,849 with 283,819 households as of December, 2006.

The climate of Yongin has four clearly distinguished seasons(spring, summer, fall and winter). The average yearly temperature is 11.2¡É, the average in January is £­2.9¡É, and the average in August is 24.3¡É. The rainfall of Masan is year average approximately 1,623mm, one of the pluvial areas in Korea owing to lots of mountains in the city and with half of this falling in between the months of July to September.

Gyeongbu Expressway and Youngdong Expressway run through and cross in Yongin. This convenient transportation network provides convenient accesses from every direction including Seoul, and guarantees the development of the large-scale distribution facilities. Also, unlike other self-governed bodies, it is a home of 10 universities, 72 researching and training facilities and many large IT companies.

As the primary gateway into the Southern part of Metropolitan, Yongin has been enjoying economic growth in the electronics industry. This growth has been based on an excellent infrastructure, peerless R&D network and supporting system for the last 30 years. In December, 2006, the number of companies registered in Yongin is 28,231, and the employees numbered 184,276. Especially, globally recognized enterprises like Samsung Electronics, world¡¯s largest D-RAM maker are the main contributors to Yongin¡¯s economic growth. In 2006 alone, Yongin¡¯s trade volume amounted to US$16,329 Mil. with US$7,101Mil. in export, which mainly consists of semiconductor and LED.

Yongin is widely known as the city of four seasons¡¯ festivals and sightseeing & events. Yongin has renowned tourist spots such as Korean Folk Village, Everland and Hoam Art Museum. There are also a wide range of sports and leisure facilities including Golf courses(24), ski resort(1) and snow sledding site(6), all of which are attracting about 10million tourists annually.
